  • How Vyrk and the Aukrust Centre renewed its acoustics

At a time when sustainability is crucial to the construction industry, it is important to find solutions that not only improve functionality but also take care of the environment. The Aukrust Centre faced an acoustic challenge that required an innovative approach. Instead of choosing a traditional solution by replacing the existing materials, it contacted Vyrk and made a sustainable choice that gave new life to existing resources.

Reusing materials – a sustainable acoustic solution

Typically, an acoustic upgrade would involve disposing of the existing panels and replacing them with new ones. The Aukrust Centre chose a different path. The existing panels, which were originally delivered by Vyrk, were taken down and sent back to Vyrk's factory in Trysil, where they were given new functionality through perforations and acoustic covers. This not only extended the life of the panels, but also greatly improved the room's sound quality.

"This way of doing things was a very good solution and is well in line with our focus on sustainability. By reusing materials, we reduce waste, of which the construction industry has plenty, and give new life to existing resources," says Vyrk's Managing Director, Steinar Lyseng, proudly.

Better acoustics without using new resources

By refurbishing the existing panels, the Aukrust Centre achieved the following:

  • A significantly reduced environmental footprint as no new materials were used

  • Lower emissions by avoiding new production

  • A significantly improved audio experience for visitors

  • An extended life cycle for the original materials

The construction projects of the future are all about smart reuse

The Aukrust Centre's solution shows that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. Instead of burdening the environment with unnecessary waste and new resources, it chose a solution that was both environmentally friendly and functionally superior. This project demonstrates how existing buildings can be modernized without leaving a big climate footprint.

Vyrk works continuously with sustainability and takes its social responsibilities in the construction industry seriously. A concrete goal for the company has been to get more square metres of wall out of every cubic metre of felled timber, and to avoid unnecessary logging.
