Nestled in the heart of Hemsedal, Fýri Resort is a monument to modern mountain luxury. Its 18,000 square metres is not only an architectural innovation in the mountain village, but also an exciting meeting between historic materials and modern fire safety.

Fýri Resort is by far Hemsedal's largest hotel with a total of 47 exclusive apartments and 144 rooms, 11 of which are exclusive suites. The impressive landmark building opened its doors in December 2022, strategically located just a short distance to both the ski lifts and the centre of Hemsedal.

Developer AB Invest A/S (Buchardt), together with architect Nordic Office of Architecture, has created a hotel that combines mountain tourism with exclusive comfort.

Historic materials meet modern hotel architecture

Fýri Resort is more than just a place to stay – it is an architectural statement about how tradition and innovation can merge. Main contractor HENT AS has realised a building that houses everything from a spa and restaurant facilities to conference rooms and a bar.

What really puts the hotel in a class of its own is the conscious use of materials, where historic elements create a dialogue with modern building techniques. This is particularly evident in the ceiling structures in the hotel's common areas, where 200-year-old imported oak panels have been given a new lease of life.

Vyrk's specially-developed solutions for Fýri

In the meeting between historic materials and modern fire safety requirements, Vyrk has delivered several specially-adapted solutions that contribute to both aesthetics and functionality. The ceilings in the restaurant, reception and spa consist of 200-year-old oak panels that Vyrk has assembled as elements – a historic material reference that adds both authenticity and character to the interior.

To meet modern fire safety requirements, we have supplied Vyrk Antibrann with a black-stained oak surface for all encasements, beams and steel columns throughout the building. This ensures both the necessary fire protection and an aesthetic integration with the hotel's other wooden details.

One of the most visible signature elements of the project is the specially developed stain colour 'Fýri brown', which characterises several of the apartments. The colour has been developed specifically for this project and is complemented by other colours from Vyrk's  palette to create a cohesive, but varied expression. We have also delivered pre-painted moulding in all hotel rooms and corridors in the hotel, in two different shades of green, as well as black.

"This project demonstrates how we can tailor our solutions to meet both aesthetic ambitions and technical requirements in modern luxury buildings. The combination of historic oak panelling and modern fireproof materials shows the breadth of our approach to the possibilities of wood," says Steinar Lyseng, Managing Director of Vyrk.

Sustainability in the luxury segment

The use of historic materials is not only an aesthetic choice but also represents a sustainable approach to luxury hotel construction. By giving 200-year-old oak panels new life in a modern context, one extends the lifecycle of the materials and reduces the need for new raw materials.

The Vyrk Antibrann solution combines the natural and renewable properties of wood with modern fire protection technology, making it possible to use wood materials where less environmentally friendly alternatives would previously have been necessary.

"Vyrk was a valuable partner both in the design phase and during implementation. Their ability to understand the building's vision and deliver customised solutions has contributed significantly to the aesthetic and functional results we wanted to achieve," says Knut Arne Follinglo, who was project manager at HENT when Fýri was built.
